Chicago and the Fine Arts

School curriculum's undoubtedly include basics such as math, science, history and reading. This is to be expected, as they are all important subjects that will be used throughout ones life. Art, theater and music, however, should not be neglected. Studies show that participating in the fine arts increases IQ, as well as fine motor skills and even math skills. Most students are required to take a class or two in one of these areas, so it stands to reason that when planning a school trip it would be wise to include an activity or two that focuses on the fine arts. When visiting Chicago, there are a several places that will meet your group’s fine arts needs.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is the place to go to hear a classical music concert featuring any number of favorites from Beethoven to Rachmaninoff. This Orchestra is considered one of the best in the United States, and performs over 100 concerts a year. Older students will enjoy an evening concert, and for younger students there are various children’s concerts. These concerts typically feature interactive elements such as a lecture by the conductor, or visual elements such as dance or mime. Listening to a concert given by the CSO will develop a greater understanding and appreciation of classical music.

Chicago is a great place to see a Broadway show. Popular Broadway productions are likely to take place in one of the fives theaters located in Chicago’s Downtown Theater District. For those that are adventurous, daring and brave, consider a trip to see an opera. The Lyric Opera of Chicago performs classic opera by Mozart, Puccini, Wagner and more, and student will be surprised at the depth of emotion that can be conveyed through song. For a more relaxed form of entertainment, take in a jazz show. Chicago has produced quality jazz, blues and gospel for years, and shows can be found in concert hall, restaurants and coffeehouses. Check the Jazz Institute of Chicago for shows done at their center, or a listing of jazz shows taking place in the community.

The Art Institute of Chicago is another site your group might enjoy. This museum is widely visited by locals and tourists alike, and is most famous for its collections of American paintings, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works. The Art Institute features several important paintings, the most famous being Seurat’s Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande, Hopper’s Nighthawks, and several of Monet’s Haystacks. Paintings by Renoir, Van Gogh and other renowned artists also make their home in this museum. There are also various collections of paintings, textiles and sculptures from ancient times to the present, and from continents including Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. There are also several special interest exhibits including an armor and weapon gallery, and a display featuring miniature recreations of various European interiors. Student tours of the museum are available, but must be requested in advance.

Here are some options for getting your group involved in the fine arts. Whether they see a symphony, or a famous work of art, visiting one of these places will be a great enhancement to your student tour.
